Never before has the world of underwear been so complex. With so many styles to choose from, here is my review of the different types when choosing which class of lingerie panties you would like to buy:
Briefs:
The top of the panty is at or near the waist and the front and back panels as well as the sides have full coverage. Briefs need not be cotton grannie panties. They come in many fancy designs, including sheer chiffon with embroidery and lace.
Bikini:
This style of panty is low-cut. It fits around the hips rather than the waist. Big news in the late 60’s and early 70’s, these now are a rather basic, classic panty design.
String bikini:
A very narrow strip of fabric, elastic band, or literally a sting join the front and rear panels of the traditional bikini cut panty - one on each side.
High-cut Rio:
This panty style is very similar to the string bikini, but has higher cut leg openings which results in the less modest coverage of a “V” shaped backside rather than the “U” found in more full coverage backsides.
Boyshorts:
Also called boy shorts or boy-leg-briefs, these knickers are designed with a longer leg (leg opening rests at the start of the thigh) and a lower riding waistline (at or below the hip), resembling men’s underwear.
Tanga:
These knickers are very similar to the boy short, but with a slightly higher waist and a lower leg. This style usually has thin straps across the hips rather than full side panels.
French-cut:
These knickers are sometimes called a Hi-kini as they fit rather like the bikini style panty - but with a higher leg opening.
Thong:
This tiny panty has almost no rear coverage, just a a strip which covers the anal cleft. Thongs are seamless, with string sides, and this once made them all the rage for avoiding panty lines. Fancy styles with pretty back decorations, to be seen over the edge of pants & skirts (known as a “whale tail”), soon became trendy.
G-String:
Similar to, but with less rear coverage than, a thong.
Brazilian back:
A panty style that covers more of the rear than a thong, but less of the backside than a traditional pair of knickers.
Tap pants:
Silky knickers with loose fitting legs, like shorts. Tap pants are often sold in sets with camisoles.
